SARKODIE ‘RAISES DUST’ AT MTN PULSE CAMPUS INVASION
…….Massive number of students troop to Sarbah Field to see the rap icon.
Yesterday, inside the University of Ghana, Legon, Lizalex field felt the stomp of over 1000 students as Ghana’s biggest rap icon, Sarkodie, performed a 1 hour non-stop string of hits at the MTN Pulse Campus Invasion. The event is the last part of the MTN trilogy which took off at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology this year in October and continued to the University of Cape Coast before ending in Accra at the University of Ghana Legon campus.Though the event was an initiative of MTN, it also formed part of the SRC Week celebrations.
Sarkodie proved to Ghana that he still commands the largest number of fans so far as rap in Ghana is concerned. His impressive flow, coupled with DJ Mensa’s creative mixing and strategic timing, delivered an overall satisfactory presentation. The multi – award winning rapper took to the stage at 10pm and held the crowd spell bound till 11pm by dropping songs from his current album ‘Highest’, and classics that reigned during the early part of his career such as ‘Push’ and ‘Bogga’. Arguably, the most exciting part of the show was when DJ Mensa threw on ‘The Revenge of the Spartans’ track. The crowd jumped and stomped to mimic Sarkodie as he moved on stage. This raised the dust and nearly caused a stampede as extremely excited fans accidentally pushed other less vibrant fans as they jumped and recited the lyrics of the song. Another thrilling moment was when DJ Mensa inserted a song Sarkodie and Ghana Music Award New Artiste of the Year 2016 winner: Fancy Gadam, collaborated on. Though most fans struggled with the northern dialect in the song, they still managed to sing a few lines.
In the end, Sarkodie closed the event with a motivational message, “People told me that i needed to pass through certain places before i can make it to the top, but i tell you, my success today is all because of the man above”. He advised the students to stay focused and determined and that everyone has their right time of glory.
Other artistes on the show were previous winners of the MTN Hitmaker reality tv show namely Koo Ntakara; winner of season 2, Kidi; winner of season 4, Kurl Songs; winner of season 5, and the ‘Angela’ hit man, Kuami Eugene. There were other upcoming talents that performed during the night.
