Multiple award winning Ghanaian rap artiste, Sarkodie, has recorded the highest number of nominations in the history of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Since his emergence in 2010, the rapper has been nominated 77 times; a number which no Ghanaian artiste has come close to. The figure was arrived at by compiling all nominations that involved the rap artiste including collaborative efforts. Records show that no musician has risen above 40 nominations since the inception of the awards ceremony. Sarkodie is also the nominee with the highest nominations for this year’s edition of the VGMAs. He received 11 nominations this year namely ‘Artiste of the Year’, and two nominations in the ‘Song of the Year’ category for ‘Pain Killer featuring Runtown’, and ‘Total Cheat with Fancy Gadam’ , ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Best collaboration of the Year’, ‘Best Rapper of the Year’, ‘Hiplife/hiphop Artiste of the Year’, ‘Record of the Year’, Hip Pop Song of the Year’, ‘Hiplife Song of the Year’ and ‘Afro Pop Song of the Year’ for his feature on ‘Jennifer Lomotey’ by Kurl Songx . The rapper picked up 9 nominations each during the 2016 and 2017 editions and an extra 48 nominations from 2010 to 2015; the individual results were 10 nominations in 2010, 11 nominations in 2011, 7 nominations in 2013, 6 nominations in 2014, 13 nominations in 2015 and absolutely no nominations in 2011. In fact, he is not just leading on the nominations chart, but also on the highest number of wins in VGMA history with an impressive 22 wins since 2010 till date. Other high hitters on the nominations list of the VGMAs are R2Bees, Kwabena Kwabena, Okyeame Kwame, Wutah, Kwaw Kese, D Black, Efya, 4×4 and Ofori Amponsah.
