On Saturday at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, at the Nominees Announcement Party for the Ghana Music Awards 2018, the host for the night, Elikem Kumordzi, unveiled the nominees for this year’s edition of the most anticipated music event in Ghana. Amongst the list was arguably the most competitive category: ‘Best New Artiste of the Year’ which contained four of currently the hottest ladies’ men in Ghana; Kuami Eugene, King Promise, Kidi, and Kurl Songx amongst others.
The four k’s of Ghanaian love songs will be going head to head for one of the most coveted awards in Ghanaian music history. With three of them, Kuami Eugene, Kidi, and King Promise also each picking up nominations for the overall award of the event, the Vodafone Song of the Year, the competition is set to be very keen. Kurl Songx, winner of the MTN Hitmaker 2016 edition, also has a fast growing fan base as his song with the late Ebony Reigns is steadily rising in views on Youtube. In fact, each of the heartthrobs has worked with a ‘heavyweight’ artiste which makes their bid for the award even stronger; kidi featuring Davido (Odo Remix), King Promise featuring Stonebwoy (Hey Sexy), Kurl Songx featuring Sarkodie (Jennifer Lomotey), and Kuami Eugene with Shatta Wale (AdwenFi).
Also included in the category were Magnom, Kwesi Arthur and B4Bonah. But the big question is why any artiste hasn’t been able to break Sarkodie’s 8 year record? He is still the only artiste to win both the ‘Best New Artiste of the Year’ and the ‘Artiste of the Year’ award at the VGMAs since 2010. Other acts to win this award were Herty Borngreat (2011), Stay Jay (2010), Kaakie (2013), Joey B (2014), MzVee (2015), Kofi Kinaata (2016), and Fancy Gadam (2017).
