Omy TV, a new television channel in Ghana, has successfully organized the maiden edition of a one day football competition for commercial drivers and bus conductors dubbed ‘Omy TV Inter Station Football Gala’. Participants were grouped according to their transport stations and made to play against each other for assorted prizes and medals at the Zulka Sports Arena in Dansoman on Monday the 22nd of April 2019.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of Omy TV, Mrs. Joyce Aku Mensah, the main purpose of the activity was to use football as a tool foster togetherness in the commercial transport sector. “Omy TV believes in peace and love. And so we organized this football gala to bring together and unite drivers and ‘mates’ of trotro stations through football.” The gala was made up of a total of six ‘Tro tro’ stations namely ‘Odorkor station, Darkuman station, Lapaz Tema Station, Lapaz Protoa station, Agege station and Nyame Akwan Station. Each team comprised 20 players with 9 aside.
At the end of the day, the 3 best teams were presented with prizes and gold medals with the overall team winning the cup and the bragging rights. The first place went to ‘Agege’ station. They received the Cup, a brand new 43″ television, gold medals, branded souvenirs from Omy TV. Second and third place went to ‘Odorkor’ and ‘Lapaz Tema’ stations respectively with the second winners walking away with a 32″ Television, silver medals, and branded souvenirs from Omy TV and the third winners receiving a brand new sound system, bronze medals and souvenirs from Omy TV.
Also present at the event as a Special Guest of Honor was Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ankrah, Greater Accra Regional GPRTU Chairman.
He was glad and didn’t expect the event to be as exciting as it was for the participants and wished that it could be organized regularly. “This Gala shouldn’t be a one-off initiative but should be more often. In fact, this will help us also have fun as our work can be very stressful. It will also keep some of our younger ones from indulging in practices that may be detrimental to them as sports offers more than just entertainment but also hope for the future; especially for these young and energetic ones”, he said.
