The 2 Pilots’, a movie featuring mainly Ghanaian movie actors based in Kumasi hence the tag ‘Kumawood’, on Friday the 26th of April 2019, surprised many as a lot of people showed up at the National Theater in Accra to watch the movie at its first ever showing in the country. This was in contrast to what many had predicted concerning the attendance. Two of the actors in from the movie, ‘Kalybos’ and ‘Emelia Brobbey’, said the message in the movie was relevant and also allowed them to show their versatility hence their agreement to be in it.
‘The 2 Pilots’ tells the story of two friends who in search for a life of luxury and wealth develop a several false schemes to dupe unsuspecting individuals of huge amounts of money. But, fate soon catches up with them and they find themselves entangled in a complicated situation with the law enforcers as a deal goes sour with an undercover police officer who pretends to be another ‘big ‘fish’ waiting to be duped. Their only way of escape is to hijack a plane, and it is then that the two begin to face reality as they found themselves in a dilemma between being ‘free but dead’ or ‘alive but not free’. Though a comedy movie, the movie also ridicules some common issues in the Ghanaian society like ‘infidelity in marriage’ and ‘accepting one’s reality’. Kalybos, when asked about if he has had any personal difficulty in accepting his reality and its relation to the objective of the movie, he said “If you live in Ghana you are always afraid to face reality. It has been an everyday issue with the young adults; facing challenges and how to overcome them by doing the right thing. The key word here is ‘the right thing’. There is a lot of pressure on the youth in Ghana which is driving them into many social vices. So, there is a big lesson to be learnt in this movie which is ‘everyone has a chance to make life better for themselves, and so the decision lies with you to either choose the right path or not.”
Emelia brobbey, also spoke about denying one’s reality and how to overcome it. She said, “Well, it happens because we are humans. Most of the time, you know that this is actually the truth but you refuse to accept it because of the society. But I think it’s high time we start facing our realities even if it is a punishment. And one way of overcoming such a problem is by speaking about it. By doing that, you may attract the attention of someone who has been in the same predicament and may offer help.”
Some of the actors who starred in the movie spoke about why they accepted their roles. Emelia Brobbey, known for starring in mostly dramatic movies, said she joined the cast for this movie in order to reveal her full self to her fans and the movie industry. “I wanted something challenging and so I accepted the script because I thought it was something exciting . I also wanted my fans to know that I don’t only cry in movies but I can do the other side too and the character I played, as a strict police officer who was a go getter and wouldn’t allow anyone take the law into their hands, helped me show my versatility ”, she explained. ‘The 2 Pilots’ movie continues to premiere in other regions around Ghana to give other movie lovers the chance to witness a good blend of comedy and morals. The movie featured other popular actors like Kojo Nkansah a.k.a ‘Lil Win’, ‘Akrobeto’, and ‘Belinda Gafah’.
