The Vodafone Ghana Music Awards ‘New Artiste of the Year’ category is the only category in the tall list of nominations that focuses on celebrating the efforts of new but rising musicians. The winner of the category must be very promising and must have shown enough evidence of becoming the next big music act in Ghana. This year’s nominees are all quite deserving but two stand out of the crowd with hit songs, numerous performances and impactful collaborations. They are ‘Kelvyn Boy’ and ‘Wendy Shay’.
Presently, both ‘Kelvyn Boy’ and ‘Wendy Shay’ are names that one may argue should not be included in this year’s ‘New Artiste of the Year’ category. This is because their names are popular enough for them to be ranked among some of the big names in Ghanaian music. With quite a number of hit songs and successful collaborations, both artistes deserve the limelight when placed on any stage in Ghana. Wendy Shay’s strength has been performances. She combines dances routines with her vocal delivery to give an entertaining presentation anytime and anywhere. Last year, she performed on quite a number of prestigious stages like ‘Ghana Rocks’, ‘BF Suma Connect’, ‘CBaze Awards’ and others. She even organized her own concert at the beach. As for Kelvyn Boy, his strength has been his features. He hasn’t done as many reputable shows as ‘Wendy Shay’, or received awards like her. But, he has been featured many times than ‘Wendy Shay’ by popular names in the Ghanaian music industry. He has worked with the likes of ‘Sista Afia’, ‘Freda Rhymz’, ‘Lutha’, ‘Stonebwoy’, and others. Both artistes picked up some impressive nominations at this year’s VGMA showing their relevance and Hardworking. ‘Wendy Shay’ received 3 nominations at this year’s edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards namely ‘Afropop Song of th Year’ – ‘Uber Driver’, ‘Album of the Year’ – ‘Shay On You’ and the ‘New Artiste of the Year’, and ‘Kelvyn Boy’ received 4 nominations 3 of which were for his work on the song ‘Kpo K3k3’. They were ‘Vodafone Song of the Year’, ‘Best Collaboration of the Year’, and the ‘Hip life Song of the Year’. This has also made the battle for the award keenly contested between the two of them.
With such achievements, many have limited the competition for the ‘New Artiste of the Year’ to both of them as the other nominees do not have equal accolades to match them. Other nominees in the category for the ‘New Artiste of the Year’ are ‘Eddie Khae’, ‘LA Meme Gang’, ‘Dope Nation’, and ‘Quamina MP’. The winners will be announced on Saturday 18th May 2019 at the Accra International Conference Centre at the the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
