One of the most keenly contested and highly anticipated category at this year’s edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, the ‘Artiste of the Decade’ was won by rap icon ‘Sarkodie’ yesterday at the new dome on the premises of the Accra International Conference Centre. The news came as a shock to a large part of the audience at the event as murmuring began when ‘Sarkodie’ was announced as the winner in contrast to what some fans had hoped to be ‘Samini’.
After two impressive performances, both at the VGMA 2019 ‘Experience Concert’ and that evening, some thought ‘Samini’ had clearly distinguished himself as being relevant with a huge public appeal even in recent times. This was clearly not the case for Sarkodie who rather had luke warm responses from both performances that evening and at the VGMA 2019 ‘Experience Concert’ earlier this week. The organizers of the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, Charter House, clearly defined the criteria for the VGMA ‘Artiste of the Decade’ as “the artiste with the highest audience appeal and popularity over the last decade. The artiste must have released a hit single/ album within the last ten years.” This category was also adjudged by the Academy, the Board and the public. However, the news did not go down with a lot of people in the auditorium and even Samini himself as he stormed out of the hall after Sarkodie was mentioned as the winner.
The award for the Artiste of the Decade was a very competitive category but Samini and Sarkodie drew the most nods from the public as the VGMA drew close. The two artistes are household names in the Ghanaian music industry and have accumulated a string of awards both locally and internationally during their careers.
