Rebecca Akufo – Addo Inspires Selflessness in Ghanaian Youth by Establishing New Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The first lady of the Republic of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs Rebecca Akufo – Addo, has received praises from young Ghanaians from all over the world for her commitment to ensuring a better future for the children of Ghana. Numerous comments on social media from mostly young Ghanaians both home and abroad applaud her recent efforts in establishing a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The facility was commissioned on the 15th of May 2019.
Responding to her motivations and what led to the establishment of the unit, she said, “After extensive discussions with the management of Korle-Bu, we learnt that in all its 96 years, the hospital has never had a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and this was surprising. We then viewed that we had to give them one, but decided to go further and build a facility that also has a unatal intensive care unit and a high dependency unit.”
Some students’ groups have applauded the initiative as a necessity and an example to African leaders to rise above partisan politics in order to see the true needs of the people are met. “When our leaders fail to act because of political motivations, it is an act of selfishness and wickedness because true leadership is putting your community first” ; a comment on social media by Richmond Owusu a student from the University of Ghana, Legon.
The President of the Ghana Union of Professional Students (GUPS) Justice Aboagye – Sarpong, commended the gesture of the First Lady saying it was an enviable one. “The First Lady’s motherly gesture exhibited by putting up such an edifice to save lives deserves commendation. It is obvious that visionary leaders look into the future to address concerns as part of their efforts to solve societal challenges. More often than not, people pretend to solicit for support for the society only to amass wealth for themselves. But what the first lady has done is exemplary and reveals a reflection of her inner character. I am proud of her motherly love and approach towards national development. And as many souls as are saved through this project, God will always remember her sacrifices and compensate her and her entire generation”, he said.
Last year, Her Excellency Mrs. Rebecca Akufo – Addo embarked on a series of fundraising activities towards the establishment of the new Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. One of these was a fashion show which saw the likes of Ambassadors and high profiled personalities make donations and pledges in support of the initiative. She established a Non profit Non Governmental Organization called the Rebecca Foundation to spear head such initiatives as she believes the Governement of Ghana cannot do it all. “The state and its relevant institutions have a great role to play. And as we know, it is a huge task for the state to provide all the resources need by all the sectors. This is where the organizations like the ‘Rebecca Foundation’ and others come in”, she explained. The new Paediatric Intensive Care Unit has been named after her as a show of appreciation by the management of the hospital.
