The third edition of the Ghana Events Awards, an annual awards scheme that celebrates contributors to the development of the Ghanaian events community, successfully came off on Friday 29th August 2019 at the SilverStar Towers in Accra. Renowned Ghanaian personalities, celebrities and representatives from corporate Ghana, joined other guests to celebrate the achievements of some of the people and bodies who have helped sustain some of the most patronized and socially transforming events in Ghana. The recipients of the awards varied from event organizers to entertainers in Ghana as well as the prizes from plaques and gift bags to Ghc50, 000.00 insurance packages. Some of the unforgettable winners of the night were Vodafone Ghana Music Awards organizers Charter House (Gh)., Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), playwright and dramatist Uncle James Ebo Whyte, MTN Heroes of Change, amongst others.
The Ghana Events Awards this year was hosted outdoors in the chilly weather, but the constant flow of free cocktail and assorted tasties coupled with periodic live band music kept the audience alive. A member of the board of the Ghana Events Awards 2019 Prince Akpah, explained the vision behind the event and promised more competitive yet rewarding categories in subsequent editions. “On behalf of the board of the Ghana Events Awards, I hereby state that this year’s edition is very credible and that’s the reason we decided to bring our expertise together to make sure that event organizers across Ghana are recognized for their work. This is the third edition and we are hoping that we would grow stronger as the years go bye. We also hope to add more categories next year which would also extend to the entire continent”, he said.
There were some surprises and unexpected wins that night as the winners of some categories and honorary awards were announced. One of the surprises was the winner of the overall award ‘Event of the Year’ which was the ‘Vodafone Ghana Music Awards’. Some thought that fracas which hit the event early this year may have been a deterrent, but the board of the Ghana Events Awards 2019 thought otherwise. Another surprise was an honorary award to the ‘Sports Writers Association of Ghana’ (S. W. A. G). A representative of S. W. A. G. Charles Asigbe, had some emotional but joyous words after receiving the award. “For, the first time in the history of this country, the longest running event in Ghana has been honored. There is no event that has been running longer than the SWAG awards”, he said. Another major surprise was a Ghc50, 000.00 Insurance package from Bedrock Insurance which was given to each winner of the ‘Male and Female Emcee of the Year’ categories.
Other special awards were presented to Santokh Singh of Multi Tv and media personality Kofi Otchere Darko. There was some entertainment provided by kelvynboy, Nana Boro, Kobi Rana and others. Fashion designer Kojo Boadi also showcased his collection called ‘Shades’; a collection of formal men’s clothing which fused African tradition with modernity and artificial leopard skin print.
