RTP Awards 2019 Comes Off Successfully Despite ‘Wet Red Carpet’ ……… As Rains Ruin Pre – Event Activities.

The rain dampened the 9th edition of the annual Radio and Television Personality Awards (RTP) as a heavy down pour hit the Accra International Conference Centre a few hours to the event. The entire outdoor setup which comprised long and wide red carpets carefully laid out at the event grounds and stages with lights rigs, were drenched in water as the rains fell. This caused a delay in the commencement of the event leading to a start at 10:43pm on Saturday 12th October 2019. Nevertheless, the event entertained the audience with musical performances, funny moments by some guests and surprise winners. The RTP Awards 2019 also received a solidarity message from the C. E. O. of Dophil Roofing Systems Dr. Kwaku Agyapong as well as some advice for media practitioners.

The Radio and Television Personality (RTP) Awards 2019 was everything but boring. Both local celebrities and media personnel graced the occasion in celebration of excellence in the radio and television industry in Ghana. Some guests still took photos on the wet red carpet despite the rains. The Chief Executive Officer of Dophil Roofing Systems and the title sponsor of the RTP Awards 2019 Dr. Kwaku Agyapong, said that his company would remain loyal to the initiative and tasked the Ghanaian media to help build the nation. “People ask me why we sponsor this programme and I tell them that it is for my love for the media, because the media are patriots of this country. So, I am ready to role with RTP Awards; I am not ready to let it go. The media has the mandate to build this nation, so let’s stop attacking each other and focus rather on issues and build a better Ghana for our children. So please, let’s use our various platforms to the advantage of our nation”, he said.

Apart from the rainfall which dimmed some of the outdoor  glamor, there were a few things that nearly got some of the audience upset. One of them was the mistake of mentioning Blakk Rasta of Zylofon Fm as a winner of one of the Reggae categories when it was actually Black Kobby of 3fm. Also, an N. D. C. Member of Parliament from Tamale North provoked some of the audience by indirectly campaigning for the N. D. C. presidential candidate for 2020 John Dramani Mahama. In his brief message, he added that, the shut down of some of the radio stations for whatever reasons was wrong and would destroy the lives of some potentials. Another one was the mistake of using the photo of The Governor of the Bank of Ghana for Alhaji Seidu Abongo of Pluzz Fm. The photo of Samuel Addison was displayed on the giant screens on stage prior to the presentation of an honorary award to Alhaji Seidu Abongo. Also, the abundance of politicians as presenters of some of the awards nearly polarized the event and raised murmuring among some of the guests.

But, the audience were thrown into excitement with performances by Gospel artiste Selina Boateng, kiDi, Hiplife veteran Caezar, and Kuami Eugene. All award winners received take – home plaques including honorees. The overall award, RTP Personality of the Year went to television host Nana Aba Anamoah of EiB Network. The event was hosted by actor James Gardiner and Cookie of Starr Fm. The RTP Awards is the biggest and longest running event in Ghana that mainly celebrates outstanding personnel and brands in the Radio and Television community in Ghana.
