On Saturday at about 4am at the Kwashieman Park, some over excited fans at the ‘Welcome to Sowutuom’ concert by award winning rapper ‘Medikal’, rushed onto the stage during the performance of multiple award winning musicians ‘Shatta Wale’ resulting in some of the equipment falling on some fans close to the stage. Some people were immediately rushed to hospitals as a result of the injuries. The business development manager of ‘Medikal’s record label, AMG Business, has stated that so far there hasn’t been any record of deaths as being propagated on some social media platforms. He added that though there was adequate security at the venue, the crowd that attended the concert totally exceeded their expectations.
A few weeks ago during the media launch of the ‘Welcome to Sowutuom’ concert in Accra, rapper ‘Medikal’ stated that the main purpose of the initiative was to give back to his fans for all the support shown him so far in his career. But, the concert ended on a rather less mutual relationship when some equipment fell on people close to the stage as a result of pushing from fans anxious to get closer to ‘Shatta Wale’ during his performance. Some of the people in the crowd who were close to the stage, received severe injuries and were taken to medical centres for treatment. There has been rumors of deaths of some of the injured but the Business Development Manager of ‘AMG Business’ Nhyira Boakye, has labeled them as false. He also stated that the crowd was beyond what they anticipated. “We haven’t recorded any deaths though we had some casualties. The crowd was about 30,000 people and this exceeded our expectations including the 50 security personnel we brought. ‘Welcome to Sowutuom’ had a far higher turnout than last year’s ‘Connect’ concert by Medikal at the West Hills Mall”, he said.
Speaking on the future of the ‘Welcome to Sowutuom’ concert, the Business Development Manager of ‘AMG Business’ Nhyira Boakye said that there were plans to relocate the concert to a different venue, but there have been calls from some stakeholders to maintain the ‘Sowutuom’ as the annual event venue. “We wanted to change the venue from the Kwashieman Park to a much more accommodating centre but, some fans have told us that they wish the event will not be taken out of Medikal’s territory ; Sowutuom. This was contrary to our plans for next year’s edition, but we love the fans and so we will comply”, he said.
Earlier this year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, rapper ‘Medikal’ received the award for the ‘Best Rapper of the Year’. The rapper’s success is one of the fastest in the music industry as his career barely spans 5 years. ‘Medikal’ has initiated other charity projects with his girlfriend actress Fella Makafui as part of his commitment to giving back to the society.
