Ghanaian filmmaker and Founder of Sparrow Studios, Shirley Frimpong Manso, began showing her film ‘Potato Potahto’ on the 15th of December 2019 on internationally patronized film streaming platform ‘Netflix’. The movie features some big names in African cinema like Joke Silva, Adjetey Anang, Chris Attorney, Joselyn Dumas among other talents. The writer and director of the movie, Shirley Frimpong Manso, expressed her joy in making it to the respected film streaming platform and said it was a win not just for Sparrow Studios but Ghana as well. She also stated that both online cinema and traditional movie centers will coexist in the future despite the challenges currently faced by the lack of adequate movie showing centers in the country.
In an exclusive interview with Shine Publications on Saturday, film maker Shirley Frimpong Manso told us how delighted she was as one of her numerous films started showing yesterday on ‘Netflix’. “We are just happy. It is really not about being the first even though I don’t think we are, but, it is rather about us as a people having more Ghanaian content on an international platform like Netflix. So, we are excited for the industry and we look forward to having a lot more Ghanaian movies on Netflix”, she said.
Responding to the emergence of online cinema in Ghana and the possible competition it will have with traditional movie showing centers, she said, “I think they will coexist. Cinema has its own benefits. I don’t think we can get away from the cinema experience because it is a whole different feeling when it comes to the cinemas; I mean the dark room, the giant screens, and so on. Cinemas also encourage us to go out and have some fun, but then, after watching a movie in the cinema, you may also want to watch it again at your convenience, and that’s where online cinema comes in.”
Shirley Frimpong Manso concluded by making a call for the development of more cinemas to help grow the movie industry in Ghana. “Yes we do need more cinemas in Ghana. We have more regions now, but how many Cinemas do we have in these regions? It is very bad, especially for a country that believes in the Arts and want to promote tourism, we need to be able to improve our distribution platforms”, she explained.
Shirley Frimpong Manso is a Ghanaian filmmaker with many films produced under her company Sparrow Studios which she manages with her husband filmmaker Ken Attoh. Her recent work ‘The Perfect Picture’ movie which starred Ghanaian award winning actress Jackie Appiah, Lydia Forson, Joselyn Dumas, Richard Mofe Damijo, amongst others, premiered in Ghana on Saturday with an impressive turnout. She is scheduled to premiere the film in Nigeria this month as well.
