Recently on an interview on a local television station ‘Joy News’, Ghanaian Afropop singer ‘Wiyaala’ praised international musician Angelique Kidjo for her achievements. She described her as a living inspiration to women and said that she feels honored anytime people likened her talents to the Grammy award winner even though she believed she could not walk in her shoes. Wiyaala was speaking about her new album ‘Sissala Goddess’ in a live video broadcast from her residence in Bolgatanga.
Despite achieving some fame in the Western world and winning the ‘Artiste of the Year’ last year at the ‘Ghana Arts and Culture Awards’, Wiyaala still believes she cannot walk in the shoes of Grammy award winner Angelique Kidjo. Therefore, she has asked her fans to see her as another unique talent on the rise and love her for that. “I like it when I’m compared to Angelique Kidjo, but I would like people to just see me as Wiyaala. Angelique Kidjo is a great music icon and I can never be Angelique Kidjo. Nevertheless, I am inspired by her just like a lot of women are and believe in what she stands for. She is a mother to all of us and she has opened the biggest door ever in the history of African music; especially when it comes to women empowerment. But, at the end of the day, I am Wiyaala, the Sissala girl from Ghana”, she said.
Wiyaala is one of the very few musicians in Ghana who fuses very indigenous melodies and rhythms in her music and is appreciated both in her locality and on the international market. She has been described by some music critics as Ghana’s best chance at winning the Grammys.
