On Saturday 13th June 2019, ‘Silverbird Cinemas Ghana’ organized the second phase of its free giveaways of popcorn and soft drinks. This happened at the Silverbird Cinemas at the West Hills Mall at Weija, Accra. In an earlier interview with Shine Publications, the Business Manager of Silverbird Cinemas Nana Yaw Twum Barimah – Yeboah, stated that the initiative was to engage their customers and show some concern especially in these times of the Coronavirus Crisis.
Many might think that free popcorn and soft drinks are not enough to send a message of care and concern to a group of people. But, Silverbird proved it wrong as over 150 people visited the branch at the WestHills mall to happily receive bags of popcorn and soft drinks. Between 2pm and 4pm a number of 132 people were served. After the official closing time at 4pm, people still came in till 4:23pm for their free snacks.
The Business Development Manager Nana Yaw Twum – Barimah explained the purpose of the free popcorn and drinks initiative. “Limitations on social gatherings has crippled us as we are not allowed to bring people together to see movies in the cinemas. But that notwithstanding, we can’t be too silent therefore the brand needs to be relevant”, he explained earlier.
Silverbird staff wore face masks both at the registration table and at the point of sales and collections. Hand sanitizers were sprayed in the palms of all recipients prior to collections; as well as temperature checks with a thermometer gun to ensure that measures to prevent the spread of the deadly Coronavirus where followed.
The gesture has added more fuel to the ongoing discussions about when exactly will cinemas reopen in Accra.
