Ghanaian filmmaker Shirley Frimpong Manso yesterday in Accra said that she was confident in the members of the newly inaugurated ‘Local Content Committee’ for Film and Television. She added that greatness starts from home and therefore it was important to recognize the need for including the Ghanaian culture in our films and television. The ‘Local Content Committee’ will be responsible for ensuring that majority of the materials on television and in film production are Ghanaian and represent the culture and identity of Ghanaians.
Shirley Frimpong Manso also stated that she disagrees that instituting the ‘Local Content Committee’ was a way of restricting foreign content. “I think that with everything that you do, it has to start from home. I don’t think that anybody is necessarily restricting anyone. I think it is more of the focal point being placed on developing both Ghanaian content and talent. So, I think it comes down to the fact that majority of what we do has to reflect who we are”, she explained.
Shirley Frimpong Manso’s most recent film ‘The Perfect Picture: Ten Years Later’ was the longest running film in theatres in Ghana last year. She and her husband Ken Attoh are one of the most revered filmmakers in Ghana currently. Together, they run a film company called Sparrow Studios.
