Diana Hopeson To Market Ghanaian Songs Through Foreign Publishing Partners

Ghanaian Gospel musician Diana Hopeson, has begun marketing Ghanaian music through her music publishing company ‘Gh Music Publishing Company’. She said her company, though quite new, was professionally linked to international music publishing partners all over the world and added that this was another beneficial channel to music creators to increase their financial gains; as well as push their music into a larger market. However, she added that there were certain criteria that every musician needed to meet before being accepted by her company. He said this a few days ago in an exclusive phone interview with Shine Publications.

During the interview, Diana Hopeson explained the need for musicians in Ghana to publish their songs and the possible benefits. “When you catalogue a song, the publisher knows all the details about the song and makes that information available to Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO). So, GHAMRO can then get the ‘DNA’ of the  song and use it to track it. So, I send the songs that I have catalogued to different music publishers all over the world, so that they would look out for the song and notice it when it is used in their respective countries for royalties to be collected; as well as the song to be pushed to where income can be generated”, she explained.

In explaining the process for selection of the songs, Diana Hopeson said that there were certain compulsory factors that she considers before adding any song to her publishing list from Ghana. “I choose the hit songs that I know have great appeal. My over 29 years of experience in the music industry plus, having travelled around other countries, has made me  know the taste of good music from Ghana. Some people think they can mimic what they hear from abroad, but those outside want to hear something authentic from Ghana. So, I pick songs that are familiar with Ghana. I also look at the quality of music production, whether the song is copyrighted, and if the musician is a member of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGAH)”, she said.

Gospel singer Diana Hopeson narrated how she began her company and said that it was a project that is here to stay. “In 2018, I got a scholarship to attend an ecosystem information technology startup programme, and because my company was new, I decided to join. So, my company ‘Gh Music Publishing Company’ was listed internationally. In 2019, I was contacted to attend one of the biggest music festivals in the world which has been organized since 1967 called ‘Marche International du Disque et de l’Edition Musicale’ (MIDEM) in France;  which I did. And, that’s how I got music publishers almost all over the world to work with me. So basically, we have a publishing company here in Ghana an we do what music publishing companies do; including copyrighting songs and registration for GHAMRO”, she said.

Finally, Diana Hopeson said that her company is well connected across the globe and already working with some notable Ghanaian musicians. “I have sub – publishers in Asia, South Africa, Canada, U.S.A, parts of Europe, Ireland and the Caribbeans. I will also be doing a mixfolio of the first 30 artistes on my publishing label which I intend releasing this year. This will be distributed to the various music schools and orchestra in countries where I have my publishing partners. I also have names like Joe Mettle, Diana Hamilton, Calvis Hammond, and others with my company”, she said.
