The biggest award at the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards the ‘Artiste of the Year’, has been on the discussion table as the final awards night approaches. Two of Ghana’s finest musicians Sarkodie and Kofi Kinaata, are on the lips of quite a significant number of music lovers on social media; precisely Facebook as the possible winners for the award.
When we look closer, both rap artistes indeed impacted the music community significantly in 2019. Multiple award winning musician Sarkodie, who has won this before, had a numerous hot songs last year which are still enjoying some airplay and buzz till date. However, Kofi Kinaata had a song which described and criticized the social state of affairs in Ghana from Religion to leadership. The song has been hailed as a relevant message and true reflection of the status quo. It has also been viewed as a timely intervention and reminder of what really matters in life. The song highlights the ills tearing the Ghanaian society apart. Earlier this year, Kofi Kinaata won some awards for this song including the ‘Artiste of the Year’ at the 3 Music Awards.
Looking at the achievements of the 2 musicians, it is clear that none of the other competitors in the group stand out as these two, hence, the fans may indeed be right. However, the final decision will also be influence by voting from the public. Therefore, the fact remains that the winner of the ‘Artiste of the Year’ will rely on the fans.
