The only awards scheme in Ghana which celebrates Reggae and Dancehall music by Ghanaian musicians the ‘BASE Awards’, has been described as a necessary initiative to the development of Reggae and Dancehall music in Ghana by musicians Ras Kuku and Epixode. Both artistes stated in an exclusive interview with Shine Publications that, the BASE Awards must return. They both said this on the 29th of August 2020 at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards in Accra.
Popular Ghanaian Reggae musician ‘Ras Kuku’ expressed his concern for the need for the return of the ‘BASE Awards’. “I think it’s necessary to have an awards scheme specifically for Reggae and Dancehall. The BASE Awards was a good thing because it made some of the youth in this genre work hard; it even made some Reggae and Dancehall artistes known to the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Also, the late Ebony Reigns first won the ‘Artiste of the Year’ at the BASE Awards before proceeding to win the same title at the V.G.M.A. In short, the BASE Awards needs to be brought back”, he said.
Fellow Reggae Dancehall musician Epixode added his voice to the campaign saying that the BASE Awards was the biggest platform for Reggae and Dancehall musicians in Ghana. “Yes, BASE Awards needs to comeback because that’s our Grammys, that’s our BET’s and our V.G.M.As when it comes to Reggae and Dancehall music”, he said.
