Award winning media personality Abeiku Santana has described tourist destinations such as historical sites and even certain places of leisure as obsolete in the new world of tourism. He said ‘events’ are the new interest of the new breed of tourists and urged event organizers to see events as a major contributing factor to tourism. He stated this over the weekend at the Ghana Social Media Business and Creative Arts Awards in Accra.
“We have a new product in tourism which is not the flora, the beaches, heritage sites and the Safari; this is called M.I.C.E. This simply means meetings, incentives, conferences and events, and these fall under tourism. South Africa and Rwanda have built a lot of events centres which host a lot of awards, so, the drive for tourism is no longer in visiting the heritage sites because they are becoming obsolete. So, whenever I see awards coming up, I say to myself, that is the new tourism”, he explained.
He further stated examples of events which have brought foreigners to Ghana namely ‘Ghana Meets Naija’, and added that such initiatives would go along way in attracting neighbouring countries to visiting Ghana.
Abeiku Santana also known as ‘Mr Tourism’, has received some prestigious awards for his tourism initiatives and work in the sector. He is the founder of Kaya Tours; a Ghanaian based travel and tour agency.
