Since 2014, when musician ‘Eazzy’ was nominated in a rap category at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, until 2020, no other female Rap musician has ever made it into the highly competitive male dominated category of the scheme. But, Rapper ‘Eno Barony’ has held her grounds as a battle rapper capable of going toe – to – toe with her male counterparts if given the chance.
Her talent and public appeal was evident during last 2 years which were also recognized by the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. Therefore, giving her the nod for the nomination for ‘Rapper of the Year’ as the only female in a 7 – man category; as well as ‘Hip Hop Song of the Year’ both in 2020.
This year, she was again nominated as the only female Rap nominee in male dominated categories namely, ‘Best Rap Performance of the Year’ for her song ‘God Is A Woman’, ‘Best Hip Hop Song of the Year’ for her controversial song ‘Force Dem to Play Nonsense’ featuring Sista Derby and Strongman, and ‘Best Hiplife Song of the Year’ for ‘Enough is Enough’ featuring Singer Wendy Shay.
But, despite her street credibility and respect as a battle rapper, Eno Barony may have to wait till another V.G.M.A, probably next year, with the hope of retaining her nominations in the Rap categories before she can be recorded as the first female rapper to be nominated 3 consecutive times at the V.G.M.A. This is because, presently, she has only 2 consecutive nominations in Rap related categories at the V.G.M.A: in the years 2020 and 2021.
Fellow musician ‘Eazzy’ in 2011 and 2014, also achieved a similar privilege by being the only female contender in V.G.M.A categories for Rap music.
However, it is without doubt that Eno Barony is currently leading the battle for respect for female musicians in Ghana.
