The first day of the 2 – day Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (V.G.M.A) event which came off yesterday in Accra at the Grand Arena, had some surprises for the public. Some names that have not been synonymous with winning awards at the annual event, grabbed awards in some of the most competitive categories. They were singer MzVee, Hiplife Duo Keche and debutante Abiana. In an exclusive interview with V.G.M.A first timer Abianna, she described the honor as very rewarding of her efforts.
New comer Abiana has surprised many by winning the highly competitive award for ‘Best Female Vocal Performance of the Year’ at the 2021 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. She beat some great names in a category of 6 namely multiple award winning vocalists Efya and Adina, amongst others to pick up the award for her vocal performance on her last year single ‘Adun Lei’. This makes one out of 2 nominations she received at this year’s V.G.M.A. She expressed her excitement to Shine Publications. “It’s humbling and exciting, and it feels like I am being recognized for what I have worked for during the years passed; now, it’s manifesting in real life and this is a dream come true. This is also an indication that when it’s your time, it’s your time”, she said.
Other surprises were Afropop singer MzVee, who surmounted a highly competitive category of 10 nominees to emerge with the ‘Best Music Video of the Year’. She won over heavyweights Kuami Eugene, Pappy Kojo, Joey B amongst others.
Another shock was ‘Keche’ after they were announced as the ‘Best Group of the Year’. This came as good news to some music enthusiasts at the event who believe the award would prevent the duo from fading out of the competition.
The second and final part of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Weekend celebrations will come off today in Accra at the Grand Arena. The event still maintained its usual glamorous nature with celebrities flocking the red carpet to showcase their clothing for the evening. This year’s event has had a drastically reduced audience due to strict adherence to Covid – 19 safety measures from the organizer ‘Charterhouse’.
