The annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards yesterday brought back authentic highlife music to the discussion table by honoring Highlife Legend ‘Agya Koo Nimo’ with a Lifetime Achievement Award. His Grandson Emmanuel kwarteng gladly received the award on his behalf at the Grand Arena in Accra.
Speaking on behalf of his Grandfather, Emmanuel kwarteng said that the legendary Koo Nimo would have loved to be at the event to receive the award, but age wouldn’t permit him to travel over such long distances. “”Baba turned 92 and that’s why he is unable to be with us tonight…”
Furthermore, the ‘Legon Palmwine band’ performed in honor of Agya Koo Nimo as a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for the night. They played authentic Highlife tunes as a reminder of the true sound of authentic Ghanaian Highlife music.
There was also a goodwill message from gospel musician Diana Hopeson as she presented the award. She recounted a performance she witnessed by Koo Nimo in Ivory Coast, and described it as a very good representation of Ghana on the international scene.
The award comes at perfect timing as modern day discussions about the real sound of authentic Ghanaian Highlife music have persisted without a headway. Agya Koo Nimo remains a pioneer in Ghanaian Highlife music, and his statements about Highlife music are still relevant till date as they form the bedrock for this Ghanaian music genre.
